Alternative Education: Freedom to Learn, Freedom to Grow

In the context of constantly evolving education, more and more parents and educators are asking: Is school the only path for children to access knowledge and achieve holistic development?
Freedom to Learn Freedom to Grow
With the desire to open up diverse perspectives on modern education, 4Life Education collaborated with Book Hunter to successfully organize a talk show on the topic “Alternative Education: Freedom to Learn, Freedom to Grow.” The program provided a space to connect those interested in education, sharing, dialogue, and seeking ways to help children learn in a respectful, free, and happy environment.
Freedom to Learn Freedom to Grow
One of the key topics discussed throughout the talk was the philosophy of John Holt – a thinker who has had a profound influence on the alternative education movement worldwide. He argued that children are inherently capable of learning naturally. What makes learning burdensome is not the knowledge itself, but how people turn learning into coercion, competition, and obedience. From this, a new perspective on education emerges: freedom is not a reward after completing a course, but a condition for genuine learning to take place.
The talk show also shared insights into the development of alternative educational models worldwide, such as Montessori, Waldorf, homeschooling, unschooling, and democratic school models. Despite their diverse approaches, these models all share a common goal: placing the learner at the center, respecting differences, and fostering self-discovery and the development of each child’s unique potential.

Besides examining current global educational trends, the program also opened up discussions relevant to the Vietnamese context. Speakers and participants exchanged ideas on how liberal education can be practiced in the classroom as well as within families. How can parents support their children through understanding, fostering motivation for learning from within, instead of relying solely on control or pressure for achievement?
The talk show features experienced and passionate speakers in education:
  • Nguyen Linh Nga – Translator of John Holt’s *Freedom and Beyond*.
She is the Founder & CEO of Consen AI, a lecturer in the Faculty of Business Administration – University of Da Nang, a researcher at VEPR and AAIC, and has over 15 years of experience in translation and interpretation in education, economics, and social sciences for organizations such as the World Bank and Waseda University. Freedom to Learn Freedom to Grow
More than just a knowledge-sharing session, the talk show was an opportunity for parents, educators, and the community to listen, connect, and reflect on the meaning of giving children the right to learn in a way that suits them. The stories, perspectives, and experiences shared contributed to opening up many new viewpoints on education in today’s era.
4Life Education would like to express its sincere gratitude to Book Hunter, the speakers, and all the parents and guests who took the time to attend, listen, and contribute to the program. Everyone’s presence and meaningful dialogues made the talk show intimate, beneficial, and inspiring.
Freedom to Learn Freedom to Grow
We hope that in the future, 4Life Education will continue to have more opportunities to collaborate with experts, educational organizations, and families to spread positive values and build an environment where every child grows up happy, free to learn, and develop in their own way.
